The City of Rector recently purchased the historic Harper building at 117 Front Street, which is one of her oldest buildings. It became the U.S. Post Office around the turn of the century and served as such until 1958, when the postal service moved to Main Street into the old Gabler Building. After restoration of the Harper building, which is located directly behind City Hall, the Rector Water Office will move in and call it home, giving much needed space to the Rector Police Department, in what is now the current water office. This building's façade is one of several in town which is adorned with the beautiful Mesker Brothers Iron Work of St. Louis, Missouri, with crown cornicing and decorative plates. The windows have been temporarily covered with plywood for security reasons as the clean up begins. |
